ABSTRACT

As the key policy issue that wellbeing has become, it is imperative that organisations understand what wellbeing means for them and how their work can show existing benefits and create new ones. Set within this context our work at Historic England is based on the premise that wellbeing provides an opportunity to re-frame our work, and the work of the archaeology and historic environment sectors, based on its public value and direct social impacts. As such this chapter address three main areas: First, it articulates how a strategic approach is useful for planning project, programme and organisational level wellbeing impacts using Historic England as an example. Second, it highlights some examples of projects and approaches that exist for improving local wellbeing and, third, it identifies the critical success factors for achieving positive outcomes through archaeology and heritage.
