ABSTRACT

‘Social cohesion’ is something that is hard to get a grip on, yet it’s a topic which everyone is confronted with. This chapter uses a design research approach in order to better understand how social cohesion works at street level, a context which (in Western cultures) has started to become socially distant and disconnected. After setting up a qualitative design research process and processing the insights gathered – the ‘museum in our street’ (MIOS) product concept is presented. MIOS provides fellow street inhabitants with ‘just enough’ triggers to engage with their neighborhood. This case study chapter shows how a design research project approach can be used to inform the design process, and how the approach contributes to iteratively improving a concept throughout the process in a real-world project example.
