ABSTRACT

In Chapter 8, author Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber offers the reader a comprehensive view of the meaning of clinical research under the light of its history and from an epistemological and methodological perspective, showing the relevance of current clinical research. From the point of view of theoretical and scientific pluralism, the author contributes to a better understanding of current clinical research. She indicates that research always takes place in certain historical, societal, and institutional contexts. She introduces different forms of extraclinical research in which hypotheses generated in the clinical situation can be further investigated building bridges to the non-psychoanalytic research community. She suggests the concept of the circular process of discovery in psychoanalytic situations, which includes the concepts used, individual mini-theories, individual condensed metaphors, and theoretical models. This chapter is discussed by Bradley Peterson in Chapter 9.
