ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the evolution of Russia’s relations with Argentina from historical and contemporary perspectives. The central thesis behind the author’s narrative is that Russian relations with Argentina are still far from fully realizing their potential, even though they are among the oldest relationships of this type in entire Latin America and the Caribbean. To identify the challenges and opportunities of bilateral relations, the author examines the most critical obstacles, particularly those concerned with distinct patterns of trade disruption between the two countries. The author argues that while some of the challenges include the need to adapt better to the arrival of new technologies and modern transportation systems, others are linked to the lack of “applied knowledge”, that is, the neglect by the authorities of the opportunities to expand political, economic, and trade relations. Even more importantly, many possibilities, which could allow positioning both Argentina and Russia more thoughtfully and advantageously against the background of the rising global issues common to both countries, often pass unnoticed.
