ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the concept of symbolic reciprocity as one of the continuous driving forces of Russia’s engagement with this part of the world. The author argues that it is possible to recognize several priorities of Moscow in the region, and many trends did change over time. However, the idea of reciprocity remains constantly present as a guiding principle of Russia’s policy in this part of the world. From this perspective, this chapter outlines the major developments in history and modern-day Russian ties with Latin America before revealing the key questions that have to be answered to comprehend better the past, present, and future of Russia’s presence in the Western Hemisphere.
