ABSTRACT

The next three chapters compile, illustrate, catalog, and assess the structural, non-structural, and hybrid mechanisms applied and explored in the previous chapters to combat flooding and sea level rise. This chapter will focus specifically on structural mechanisms. The full catalog of structural mechanisms is organized into five categories: levees/dikes, dams, floodwalls, underground systems, and floodgates. Each category is assessed according to their relative location, cost, scale, and coastal hazard mitigation capabilities. Further, a list of examples included under each category are described and the strengths and weaknesses of each category are briefly identified.
