ABSTRACT

This chapter compiles, illustrates, catalogs, and assesses the non-structural mechanisms applied and explored in the previous chapters to combat flooding and sea level rise. The full catalog of non-structural mechanisms is organized into six categories: dune and sand, dredging and mounding, bioswales, wetlands, detention/retention, and rain gardens. Each category is assessed according to their relative location, cost, scale, and coastal hazard mitigation capabilities. Further, a list of examples included under each category are described and the strengths and weaknesses of each category are briefly identified.
