ABSTRACT

This chapter considers fact-checking as an emerging journalistic brand and activism that has the potential to correct the inaccuracies in the public sphere and establish common ethical consensus/consent. It mainly looks at how some individuals have emerged both as citizen journalists and activists to engage in fact-checking processes, not only to verify claims and information but also to promote a healthier public debate in the contemporary media environment and to set the stage for movements to grow. Using a qualitative approach, this study aims to explore and trace the profile and trajectory of Mustapha Fekkak, an online fact-checker, to understand his practices, and productions, and the impact he makes in the public sphere. The significance of this research resides in the fact that it tracks another form of activism that has emerged in parallel with development in the Moroccan media landscape. The chapter also distinguishes itself by investigating the importance of this new trend or form in creating communities of interest.
