ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the impact of young people’s civic engagement and local peacebuilding on community development. It investigates how the peace process can be enhanced to build on the peacebuilding contributions and aspirations of youth, using extensive desk reviews and in-depth interviews with different stakeholders including youth. This chapter attempts to enrich the field of peacebuilding literature with a critical examination of the implementation mechanism of the UNSCR 2250 and its complementary resolutions 2419 (2018) and 2535 (2020) applying that in the Yemen context, analysing its successes and failures in bringing Yemeni youth into the peace process. The chapter argues that as long as the peace process in Yemen does not fully include all segments of Yemeni society – youth in particular – who are the future of the country, this process will likely lead to a fragile peace that is vulnerable to outbreaks of violence.
