ABSTRACT

In France, musical creation has been continually gaining ground during the past decades, both in school settings and other frames. Nowadays, it has an important place in school curricula. But what does creating (or composing) music in classroom settings mean? If creating music is a learning situation, which competencies does it develop? What are the consequences for evaluation and assessment? Is there a professional training for inventing music with students in class? What does it entail and prepare for? This chapter provides a short historical and political overview on the general situation in France and gives an insight into current practices, both in school and professional training.
