ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the various pedagogical contexts in which composing takes place in and outside school contexts in Germany. For this, the authors look back on the meaning and history of composing in music education. Then insights into how composing is learned and taught in school contexts are given, e.g. by referring to data from an analysis of curricula and from teaching materials. Moreover, teachers’ attitudes and views on their own practices in teaching music composition are discussed. Also, an overview is given on the many projects in music composition that are offered in Germany (e.g. school projects in cooperation with composers, institutions and/or extracurricular activities, and instrument lessons). The chapter ends with an outlook on the various aspects of composing pedagogy that are currently examined by research groups and researchers in Germany. This overview makes visible that composing pedagogy is of growing importance in German music education and has undergone significant changes over the last few years.
