ABSTRACT

Recently, in Italian primary and secondary schools, more space has been dedicated to compositional learning activities. Composing in school is considered one of the core activities in music education, where children may develop on already known music concepts and materials for creating a new musical product. These tasks focus teachers’ attention not only to the final result, but also on the learning process, which is student centered. Different teaching strategies are used to enhance students’ creativity and active role as learners in music production and composition, and several projects have been developed to search for new effective methodologies for promoting children's involvement in music education. The aim of this chapter is to examine the current situation for composition pedagogy and teaching methodologies in Italian schools, considering the national curriculum and some experiences and projects developed in the field of musical creativity. Finally, some relevant processes involved in music composition are analyzed with the purpose of laying the foundations for an educational approach based on processes rather than products.
