ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how communication professionals adapt to COVID-19 impacts and lead to successful communication and transitions in a changing working environment. Findings reported in this chapter are largely derived from the 2020-2021 North American Communication Monitor and represent an international sample of communication professionals in Canada and the United States. Results indicated that communication professionals have paid much attention to the news about the global pandemic and they all agreed that the COVID-19 pandemic is a heavily discussed topic in their country. In general, surveyed professionals acknowledged the pandemic is relevant to the daily work of their communication department or agency and directly affects the daily work of their communication department or agency. Communication professionals used various sources for COVID-19 information. Similarities and differences were identified between communication professionals in Canada and the United States. Implications on how communication professionals could adapt their role as a facilitator of effective communication on issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic are discussed.
