ABSTRACT

This discusses the group of people who live at the intersection of multiple marginalised or minority identities: forensic mental health patients. This chapter describes the rationale for this book and locates it within other works seeking to address structural inequalities in criminal justice and mental health. Forensic mental health care offers treatment to individuals who have committed a criminal offence or have engaged in high-risk behaviours and live with a mental disorder. Marginalised individuals and groups are less likely to enjoy fair legal arrangements and procedures, be encouraged into political and public life, or be given the opportunities to express their individuality and personhood without stigmatisation or prejudice. Forensic mental health care offers treatment to individuals who have committed a criminal offence or have engaged in high-risk behaviours and live with a mental disorder. The nature and quality of forensic care vary considerably around the world.
