ABSTRACT

We begin this chapter by discussing the history of racism and oppression within the United States. This is essential in helping the readers to understand that the overrepresentation of minorities in the criminal justice system is methodical and deeply rooted in American history. After outlining the historical context, we then transition into a discussion about systemic racism in modern America. We highlight the consequences of systemic racism including the disparities in access to resources/healthcare for minorities, the impact of implicit bias, and minorities’ experience of racial trauma. We then discuss the inside of our criminal justice system and how minorities are treated before providing recommendations.
