ABSTRACT

Through the authors’ use of interdisciplinary and holistic teaching methods in the Dance Department at Connecticut College, they sought to create a healing space within the academy for students to undergo an inner investigation about race, identity, heritage, and belonging through dance. Courses centered around traveling to Senegal and Ghana to engage in a deep historical exploration of the legacy of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. This chapter reflects how themes of Black Feminist Theory emerge through the learning experiences of students. Specifically, the authors highlight how they, as Black women, have uniquely created sacred spaces for students to give birth to new forms of knowledge that centers the voices of people of color.
