ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the book editors’ interview with two Black women full professors turned department chairs. Chapter authors highlight reflections of the conversation, and the space created while reviewing the Black women leaders’ narratives. Authors specifically discuss the metaphorical social positioning of Black women full professors as canaries via three themes: (1) competence as overachievement: Black women as intruders/interlopers; (2) intentionally disrupting and abolishing structural oppression; and (3) taking up space: connected ways of being, knowing, and leading.
