ABSTRACT

Despite formidable professional adversity and personal barriers to promotion and tenure, Black faculty women continue to make significant advances by reimaging Black feminist epistemology and praxis as they negotiate their personal identities and experiences, as well as their professional narratives to seek advancement and success. This chapter discusses the contemporary, evolving theoretical, and conceptual frameworks Black faculty women can utilize to better define and align their teaching, research, and service in a manner that illuminates their lived intersectional experiences while meeting the commitments to their families and shared communities. The chapter concludes with lessons learned for faculty women navigating the tenure and promotion process. Implications for practice are discussed to provide useful strategies for institutional support for women of color in general.
