ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to reexamine the article, Maids of Academe, within the context of the Black Lives Matter movement to understand how experiences in the academy shape the interpretation of Black faculty regarding inequity and academic hostility. Specific focus will be on how Black women faculty are seen as the experts and work horses on issues related to Blackness and are simultaneously invisible in decision-making roles on policy and procedure. Through revisiting the Maids of Academe article, the intent is to recognize how little has changed for Black women faculty in the academy over time and to draw attention to the Black Lives Matter movement as a defining framework for change in the academy.
