ABSTRACT

On the subject of human intentionality Dennett reaches the following conclusion: ‘The design process itself is the source of the people own intentionality. Dennett seems to suggest that humans have an evolutionary advantage (over other species) in being able to represent goals, but he does not say what type of influence these representations have on behavior. Montefiore argues that the concept of intentionality is indissociable from any adequate analysis of meaning or linguistic behavior. In addressing the question of how animals organize their knowledge of the consequences of behavior, Dickinson considers the nature of the internal representation that encodes the learning experience. The alternative design is that the robot reviews its behavioral options and sees which is most likely to maximize utility. In conclusion, there is some confusion in the author mind as to what people mean by intentional behavior.
