ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the Laubichler Lab at Arizona State University. In the past ten years, the lab has transformed itself from a history of biology lab with a digital humanities “touch” to a lab in which pretty much all research is done using computational methods and big data sets. This research direction presented several challenges, many of them typical for this kind of work. The biggest problems were infrastructure, education, and sustainability. This chapter will reflect on experiences regarding the training of students and postdocs and related challenges, such as what kind of digital and computational work is possible given limitations regarding expertise and resources and how difficult it is to make this kind of work sustainable in the long run.
