ABSTRACT

This chapter considers a case study approach to the psychological assessment of risk in an individual convicted of human trafficking offences. It provides an overview of human trafficking and modern slavery. The chapter explores the practice of assessing risk in perpetrators of human trafficking using the example of Mr Poplar. To receive a conviction for human trafficking under the Modern Slavery Act 2015, Mr Poplar must have been found to be involved in one or more of the key elements of the Act, namely recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt. The authors can strengthen their understanding by ensuring their familiarity with key information and guidance materials on modern slavery, human trafficking, NCA intelligence assessments, and academic journals and articles and research reports on victims and perpetrators of trafficking and modern slavery.
