ABSTRACT

This chapter endeavours to make sense of the field of GBV as it stands at the time of writing to inform ongoing efforts to mitigate and prevent harm by and against the children, young people and young adults who are its most frequent protagonists. For example, most United Kingdom and United States research on gang involvement and gang violence suggests that involved young people are exposed to disproportionate levels of violence compared to non-gang-involved people. From clinical experience, young people who affiliate with gangs and present to the criminal justice system often come from disadvantaged backgrounds with numerous adverse childhood experiences. Further, the authors have an awareness of the evidence about individuals who are involved with GBV, which will underpin the development of their understanding of Ms Redwood as a person with the history she has.
