ABSTRACT

This chapter uses the case of Ms Olive and Mr Maple as a framework to outline a structured professional judgement approach to assessment, formulation and risk management planning in stalking cases. It begins with an orientation to the referral, including determining whether stalking is present and how to proceed if it is unclear. The chapter addresses interviewing a person who has stalked, including the role of functional analysis and the application of structured risk assessment approaches. The authors suggest the assessor should think about how stalking may form part of a sexual offence process and integrate the stalking behaviour into the risk assessment, formulation and risk management plan while addressing the potential for future harmful sexual behaviour as a primary focus. Thus, given the referral question, the assessment will focus primarily on understanding Ms Olive's stalking and how to best manage any ongoing risk to Mr Maple and his family.
