ABSTRACT

The chapter aims on analysis of Chinese FDI inflows into the German economy and derivation of implications for the importance of these inflows for Germany. It analyses German Foreign trade statistics data from German Bundesbank for the period 1989-2017 with common methods of quantitative descriptive analysis. First, worldwide FDI stocks in Germany are analysed and, second, based on these findings, Chinese investments are evaluated against this benchmark. I find positive Chinese FDI stocks development for the whole period, in especially after 2004, however, from small initial levels. In comparison with overall FDI in Germany as well as with the share on aggregated economic output, it is still on a marginal level. Chinese FDI is focused on a relatively small number of firms and employs only small numbers of persons. The chapter highlights the FDI flows in direction from China to Germany in a long-term perspective, thereby adding new insights in the research field of Germany as a FDI receiving host from China.
