ABSTRACT

Most of the contributions to the debate on a post-growth society are of European or (North) American origin, and tend to focus on their own economic, political, social and cultural context – while contributions to this debate from the Global South are rare. Here, the focus is more on questions of social justice and international dependencies. Despite numerous possible common points of reference, the strands of discourse on the question of what kind of society we want to live in in the face of globally relevant ecological and social conditions remain largely unconnected. This chapter highlights differences in the living and working worlds for people in the Global South and addresses the role of economic growth in the North and South. This perspective can also complement and stimulate reflection on productive activity [work] in the post-growth society.
