ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a range of theoretical concepts and policies that provide valuable pointers for meaningful activity in a post-growth society. Expanded concepts of work call into question an understanding of work that focuses on formal employment, demanding a redistribution and revaluation of activities essential for our society. Debates about unsustainable or meaningless jobs not only imply a drastic reduction of working hours, but also that some jobs must disappear completely. If formal employment loses its central role in society, then new forms of participation and new ways of securing one’s livelihood will be needed. Innovative working time policies in recent years offer important starting points on how to arrange living and working time in a sustainable way.
