ABSTRACT

This essay explains an approach to teaching experiential conceptualization for student directors by introducing frameworks from user experience design (UX). By introducing a design framework utilized by software and product developers, students gain a skillset that may be applied within a theatrical context for experiential theatre making and beyond theatrical confines for group ideation and collaboration. This skillset helps students understand the ways in which “design thinking” is an analog process to the conceptualization process required when working in collaborative teams for theatrical production.
