ABSTRACT

This essay describes a method for rethinking the formal qualities found within a text as a way of better understanding the audience's experience of visual design. The impact of visual storytelling for a modern audience begins with unlocking its relevance for the modern artist. The discovery of the interiority of a setting helps create the container for highlighting the action of the narrative. This unlocking begins the process of discovering the formal qualities of the play. We often find that the creator of the narrative has suggested specific iconography. To effectively make a connection between designer and audience, the designer must challenge the scripted iconography of the story.
