ABSTRACT

This article offers practitioners a pre-production process and system for building interactivity into performances in a holistic, cohesive manner. It identifies, for creative teams, essential questions and considerations for the inclusion of the audience in the creation of the theatrical event. This article also explores specific technology-based solutions for developing audience agency, influence, and participation. The proposed approach ensures that the relationship between the audience and performance is examined at every step of the production, preventing designed interactivity from appearing as an afterthought or gimmick and maintaining it as an essential element of the storytelling, critical to a successful manifestation of the artistic vision. Concluding this essay is an assignment for students to design and create their own interactive production.
