ABSTRACT

Hilton, one of the fastest-growing companies in the world's hotel industry, has its headquarters located in McLean, Virginia. Hilton released a report, “Travel with Purpose 2030 Goals,” to mark its 100th anniversary in 2018. The report emphasizes Hilton's goal of reducing the environmental footprint over the next decade and more than doubling investment in environmental activities. In the report, Hilton points out that they would reduce the total amount of carbon emissions in Hilton's properties by 61 percent. Some consumers argue that Hilton's environmental practices are not for the environment, but for its profits, often referred to as greenwashing. In 2006, Tourism Concern, an organization advocating ethical tourism, accused Hilton of its greenwashing behaviors. Tourism Concern argued that Hilton, who claimed to be engaged in eco-friendly environmental protection activities, uprooted numerous palm trees and mangroves to build the Hilton Complex Resort on Mandhoo Island.
