ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to describe different interventions aimed at managing different type of clinical problem, using the case of a patient with a large right hemisphere lesion as an example. It presents the patient and his wife, as well as the couple dynamics that emerged after the stroke. The chapter discusses theoretically elaborate on the clinical material presented, using S. Freudian and D. W. Winnicottian ideas. A consequence of Dan’s stroke was a dense left hemiplegia, which left him wheelchair bound and physically dependent on others – mainly his wife, Sarah. The stroke also caused several cognitive deficits, which can be summarized by in the classical ‘right hemisphere syndrome’: hemi-spatial neglect, anosognosia and constructional apraxia. Dan was very eloquent, thus suggesting a preservation of language skills. He was an intellectual, with a great wealth of knowledge in many areas, which also seemed to be preserved after the stroke.
