ABSTRACT

In 2018, intralingual translation suddenly became mainstream on social media following Netflix’s decision to translate the movie Roma from Mexican Spanish to Iberian Spanish. The polemic turned into a heated debate which started on Twitter and then went viral. This chapter explores this controversy, analyzing its underlying causes and consequences. It highlights the power of social media and digital resources as key to making corporations realize the implications of their decisions. Finally, the chapter suggests social media as a source to measure the immediate reception of media content.
