ABSTRACT

Poems can be structured in numerous ways, from being divided into stanzas to less obvious methods, such as the use of repetition. Strong openings and endings, and the relation of a poem’s title to its contents, can also give shape to a poem that appears otherwise freeform. Using enjambment across stanza breaks offers broader possibilities. A stanza break is the point where a stanza ends. The concept of circularity can be a fruitful approach to crafting an ending. Some poems are structured through the author’s use of repetition, that is, a word or phrase repeated at various points in the poem. The poem’s speaker is a killer shark lambasting humankind for our destruction of the planet, our selfishness and hypocrisy in the face of climate change.
