ABSTRACT

The phenomenon of parents communicating with their children about pornography is a relatively new area of research that requires greater attention—particularly as online pornography becomes more pervasive and accessible for adolescents. This chapter summarizes related research and offers insight from my previous works on parent-child pornography communication. Insights include the following: (1) increase parental education about the topic of pornography prior to parent-child conversations, (2) build parental definitions of the word “pornography” to empower parent communication, (3) instill awareness among parents regarding the pervasiveness of pornography, (4) encourage parents to remove shame-based messaging, and (5) promote ongoing, open, and positive relationships in the parent-child communication environment.
