ABSTRACT

Much of current school sexuality education is heteronormative and cisnormative, assuming that all students are heterosexual and cisgender and concurrently ignoring and invalidating students with LGBTQ+ identities in the classroom. Recent research has begun to explore LGBTQ+ students’ experiences in sexuality education and its impact on their identity development and health outcomes. Additionally, research has suggested recommendations for change at various levels (e.g., school, district, state, federal) to create and deliver curricula that are comprehensive and inclusive of all students and identities. This chapter explores the current state of school sexuality education and a path, through recommended policy change, to require inclusive curricula at a federal level to provide all students adequate sexuality education, regardless of their identity and the school they attend.
