ABSTRACT

Sex education plays a critical role in adolescent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection prevention, sexual health, and well-being. Effective sex education encompasses both what is taught and how information is communicated. SkillFlix® is a streaming video resource designed to improve the communication skills of educators delivering sexual health education in classroom and group settings. SkillFlix provides Microskills® video models, ultra-short training videos that demonstrate desired skills, an approach supported by tenets of classic social learning theories and neuroscience. In a pilot test of SkillFlix conducted with educators, learners demonstrated significant improvement communicating with youth about sexual health topics in a classroom setting. Skill acquisition occurred even for educators who employed a content versus skills acquisition focus. We conclude with a discussion of how this new form of training evolved from classic in-person skills training and is well suited for dynamic virtual and blended training landscapes.
