ABSTRACT

This chapter will examine the different ways masculinity is reinforced throughout the many settings that young gay, bisexual, and queer-identifying adolescent sons navigate. Readers will learn about the opportunities parents have to counter harmful stereotypes about what it is to be a “man.” Inclusive sex talks are premised on the belief that parents are untapped resources for the development of positive mental health and are underutilized as agents of prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. This chapter will center the needs of adolescent males with emerging same-sex attractions, behaviors, and identities. By highlighting this group’s unique concerns, sex educators can assist parents in holding more inclusive sex talks at home.
