ABSTRACT

One of the essential components of thriving in college is the concept of community. A sense of community allows students to share experiences with others and results in higher levels of student success and persistence. The move to online learning and the closing of campus created a paradigm shift for many students. While the challenges to a sense of community were serious, students realized they needed to adapt in order to stay motivated. Some were more proactive about reaching out to faculty, while others mentioned that they joined study groups online. This chapter also explores the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on Communities of Color. Perhaps more than their white peers, Students of Color found community in their family and home communities, even as they navigated the fact that many of their communities were among the hardest hit by the coronavirus.
