ABSTRACT

The internationalization of higher education has witnessed tremendous growth in Nigeria. Today, many universities and colleges are building international networks, integrating intercultural components into teaching, encouraging international research collaborations, engaging in distance learning activities, and using innovative learning management systems. Indeed, the internationalization of higher education in Nigeria is not without unintended consequences. This chapter highlights the unintended positive consequences, including improved academic quality, global recognition, improved ranking, increased use of technology, and enhanced national development. It further examined some of the unintended negative consequences of internationalization of higher education institutions in Nigeria, such as brain drain and the capital flight associated with brain drain. The chapter concludes with recommendations on how Nigeria can maximize the positive consequences of internationalization while also minimizing its unintended adverse consequences.
