ABSTRACT

Asian is the fastest-growing racial group in the U.S. that includes heterogenous and distinct subgroups. It is likely that play therapists will have opportunities to work with children and families from an Asian cultural background. In this chapter, we discuss the intersectionality between Asian cultural values, stereotypes towards Asians, and mental health of Asian children and families. We explore clinical considerations for working with Asian children and parents/caregivers within the context of play therapy. We also share our own experiences working with Asian children and the implications of these cultural opportunities. Finally, we address ways to work with the Asian families and systems to promote mental health of the Asian community.
