ABSTRACT

Representing over 20 countries across the world, multiple languages, various religious affiliations, and no census data, defining the Middle Eastern population becomes an arduous task. Furthermore, Middle Eastern children are part of one of the most misunderstood ethnic groups in the United States (Erickson & Al-Timimi, 2001). This chapter serves to further define the Middle Eastern population, describe difficulties faced by these children and their families, and helps provide historical and cultural context that impacts the mental health of this population. Clinical considerations for play therapists working with Middle Eastern children and their families include skills to overcome stereotypes, guidelines for supporting in identity development, considerations for toys in the playroom, and advocacy opportunities for working with parents and other stakeholders.
