ABSTRACT

Cultural humility is a foundational principle of a multicultural orientation in play therapy. Cultural humility is characterized by an acknowledgment of limitation in fully knowing the world of another person while simultaneously seeking to connect and understand another’s worldview and experiences. Play therapists who embrace cultural humility hold a focus on other and actively work to honor and embrace the cultural background, experiences, and identities of children and their families. In this chapter, we introduce the concept and practice of cultural humility as integral to the play therapy process. We provide a review of terms related to culture and cultural humility, as well as explore the connection between child-centered play therapy and cultural humility. Finally, we provide recommendations for play therapists to enhance their self- and other-awareness in the context of cultural humility.
