ABSTRACT

Because approximately 77% of U.S. adults say that religion is very or somewhat important to them, play therapists are almost certain to work with highly religious families, and it is important that they have the competency to do so. In this chapter, we explore the ways in which religion impacts the lives of children and families and how play therapists can facilitate healthy development with these families. We overview four of the major religions in the U.S. and discuss implications for clinical practice with these families. Finally, we provide our own experiences with religion in childhood and beyond.
