ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the national security implications of audio-visual forgeries and fake documentary evidence. In particular, the chapter looks at the evolution of forgeries and the recent technological developments that have made computer generated written and audio-visual forgeries—deepfakes—possible. Having determined the direction in which these developments are moving, this chapter analyses the impact of deepfakes on national security through a disinformation lens. It does so by evaluating the impact of deepfakes on the international, national, sub-group, and individual level. This chapter’s conclusions offer some reflections on the future of deepfake disinformation and whether defending ourselves against the threats that deepfakes pose to national security is possible.
