ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide an interdisciplinary perspective on disinformation, its weaponization against democratic societies and ways to counteract it. Special focus shall be placed on specific social, psychological, technological and last but not least cultural factors that can be used with different levels of efficacy and impact to provide better immunity to the effects of disinformation undermining citizen and state security. Current approaches focus on risk factors and reverse engineering of disinformation techniques. Nevertheless, in this chapter, the survey on current approaches is complemented by a cultural studies analysis of potential protective factors which could be integrated into an innovative approach. Finally, the case study proposes insight into protective factors to disinformation, as reflected by the Ukrainian / global grassroots cultural response to Russian propaganda and disinformation.
