ABSTRACT

In this introductory chapter, we introduce the current (as of early ’22) state of Higher Education (HE) internationally and in particular in the UK and explore how universities are rethinking themselves in response to sector changes and the longer-term effects of the pandemic situation. We present many of the key issues facing learning and teaching in HE in general, including enhancing innovation, moving online, widening access, and embedding employability and internationalisation, and give you space as a reader to reflect on how these challenges are affecting you. This introduction then serves as a challenge to the subsequent chapters to consider how leadership can work in a rapidly changing external environment.
