ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the neurocognition of crosslinguistic influence (CLI) of language(s) that have been learned on a language to be learned. It focuses on both facilitative (enhancement) and inhibitory (interference) effects. The chapter first provides a brief historical review of CLI, followed by a detailed report of facilitative and inhibitory CLI with empirical evidence from studies that applied neurocognitive measures to reflect brain responses, brain changes, or engagement of memory systems during (morpho)syntactic processing. Finally, future research directions and implications of CLI research for pedagogical improvement are discussed.
