ABSTRACT

Predictive processing has been considered an important part of language processing and coined as a mechanism underlying language learning. This chapter reviews theoretical approaches and empirical research on prediction in second-language sentence processing and learning, focusing on event-related potentials and meaning-based predictions. Predictive processing is very variable, even in first-language processing. An important research goal is to identify the sources of this variation. Second-language learners tend to be more variable in their processing due to differences in, e.g. proficiency and cross-linguistic influence. Investigating prediction in second-language processing will therefore add to our understanding of whether and when language users predict, and when prediction can help learning.
