ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the use of functional neuroimaging to investigate second language (L2) brain organization. The chapter begins with some historical perspective, including an overview of the early research that used positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study language processing in bilinguals. This is followed by a discussion of some of the more recent methods that have been used in the field. Advantages and disadvantages of functional neuroimaging in the context of L2 are highlighted, ending with suggestions for avenues for future research that will help to advance the field.
